Outfielder James “Ducky” Holmes of the Detroit Tigers and pitcher John “Mule” Watson of the Philadelphia Athletics played baseball before the numbering of jerseys became a common practice. But surely each would have observed that a cool number font is essential to a great-looking uniform.
