All over America, shows and “cruises” are held to show off head-turning classic cars. No doubt you’ve turned your head to see a 1969 Shelby Mustang, 1931 Packard, or ’57 Chevy as it drove past. Not everyone can see these beautiful machines, though – a problem the non-profit Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology (DIO) is dedicated to solving.
Each year the DIO holds a benefit vintage car show, “EyesOn Design,” to help raise funds for vision-related research. The ultimate goal is to restore the gift of sight to as many of the blind and visually impaired as possible. This year’s EyesOn Design benefit will be held Sunday, June 17 at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan. The event, going from 10 am to 4 pm, will feature between 200 and 300 vehicles, including classic cars, motorcycles, and hydroplane boats, as well as special exhibitions. Admission is $20.
As part of the festivities, on Saturday, June 16, from 11 am to 4 pm, the second annual EyesOn Design Garage Crawl will be held at the Stahls Automotive Foundation in Chesterfield Township, Michigan. Home to historically significant automobiles from every era, the foundation exists to “educate, motivate, and inspire young people with a passion and appreciation for vintage vehicles.” From the 1910 Buick to the 1935 Lincoln to the 1957 Chevrolet, the foundation’s collection of cars and memorabilia traces the development of the automobile.
Admission to the Garage Crawl is $15, or $20 for a Combo Ticket, which includes admission to Sunday’s EyesOn Design Car Show. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling (313) 824-4710.
