How to Choose a Vinyl Cutter

by Juliet Kalmeta,  Training Coordinator

“Which vinyl cutter should  I buy?”  is a  question we hear daily.  The decision can be made easily if you know what type of material and services you want to offer.  Stahls’ ID Direct offers three popular cutters and has a neatly organized Vinyl Cutter Comparison Chart that includes their technical specifications, functionality, and included software.

But what if all this info is just too much?  Let’s stick to the basics…

GCC Expert 24 LX

  • Cutter cost $695.00 (Current Sale Price: $580)
  • Stand (optional) $90.00
  • Roll-fed Cutter
  • Cuts CAD-CUT® heat transfer material, Flock, Sign Vinyl, and many other similar types of media; including card stock and stencil material for sand blasting.
  • Features an optical eye; so you can precisely cut around an image printed on InkTra™ Opaque Transfer Paper.
  • Software will create a cut contour line around an image for the print/cut feature.
  • Microsoft Windows® compatible.

Roland® GX-24

  • Cutter cost $1,795.00
  • Stand (optional) $295.00
  • Roll-fed Cutter
  • Cuts CAD-CUT heat transfer material, Flock, Sign Vinyl, Pressure Sensitive Poly-TWILL™, and Rhinestone Template Media.
  • Features an optical eye; so you can precisely cut around an image printed on InkTra™ Opaque Transfer Paper.
  • Software will create a cut contour line around an image for the print/cut feature and allows you to create text and shapes directly in program; so you don’t need separate graphic software for creating basic text.
  • Microsoft Windows and Macintosh  compatible.

Ioline™ 300

  • Cutter cost $6,995.00
  • Table top only
  • Flatbed Cutter
  • Has the power to cut anything from heat transfer material to Twill, Applique’ fabrics and more.
  • 18 x 30″ max cutting area with removable tray for fast material loading and unloading.
  • Able to cut Kiss-Cut™; which means the foreground is tacked down to the background with Pressure Sensitive adhesive while cutting.  This saves an average of 40% sewing time!
  • Software will create an appliqué sew file for the cut pieces and includes zig-zag or satin stitch types.
  • Microsoft Windows compatible

So if you’re just starting out or plan on cutting some player names here and there, the GCC Expert 24 LX is a good fit.  If you want to offer a little more and expand into cutting Rhinestone templates or plan on having your cutter running 24/7, the Roland GX-24 will get the job done. Want to Kiss-Cut™ Poly-TWILL™, cut Felt, or plan on high volume amounts of appliqué cutting?  The Ioline 300 is the cutter you need.

If you own any of these cutters, and want to help out those who need help deciding,  please put your thoughts in the comment section. Thanks!

  1. The navy blue Rhinestone Stencil Material we sell now is much thinner than the “sea foam green” thick stencil material. Folks are using the GCC Expert 24 & Expert 24 LX to successfully cut thin stencil materials of all types. The GCC is an entry level cutter and an economic choice for those who are just starting out. The option of creating pre-sets in the GreatCut program takes the guesswork of setting up the cutter for different material types. It really is simple and has much potential at an affordable price!

    Hi
    Can the Gx-24 cut felt

  3. Hi Chris,

The GX-24 is not recommended for cutting felt. Flat bed cutters, like those produced by Ioline, are recommended for that type of cutting.
