The GroupeSTAHL Digital Marketing team (plus a few extra pairs of helping hands) stepped away from all things heat printing to volunteer at Gleaners Community Food Bank Distribution Center in Warren, Mich., the morning of Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015.
The group of 20-25 volunteers helped sort and pack food into boxes that will be distributed to families in need throughout the metro Detroit area. The team’s 2.5 hours of volunteer time will help feed 16,000 individuals.
About Gleaners:
Gleaners provides more than 28 million emergency meals to those in need throughout the southeast Michigan area. Food is collected in various ways, including donations from major food processors, retail chains, and food drives. Gleaners also purchases food at deep discounts.
The donated and collected food is then brought to one of five Gleaners distribution centers. Here, the food is inspected, sorted, and packed. This is where volunteer effort is crucial; more than 48,000 volunteers are needed each year to get food ready for delivery.
How You Can Help:
As of right now, the top five food items needed at Gleaners include:
- Canned fruit without heavy syrup
- Canned vegetables
- Tuna fish
- Peanut butter in plastic jars
- Healthy cereal and oatmeal
If you’re in the Detroit area and would like to help, visit the Gleaners Volunteer Opportunities page. There are five distribution centers in the area:
Volunteer shifts at Gleaners distribution centers are typically 2-3 hours, and you can volunteer during a time that fits your schedule. Sign up by yourself, with a friend, or get a whole group involved. You can even host a virtual food drive.
