The Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs are sporting redesigned uniforms this season. The Panthers’ new sweaters borrow from military iconography, with a new crest featuring a more realistic panther head and sleeve patches consisting of a Florida flag, full-body panther, and a curved bar with the word “Florida” on the home jersey and “Panthers” on the road version. To keep with the military theme, the captain and alternates will have an additional bar added to the sleeve patches, denoting their rank.

The new red home jersey features a white center stripe outlined with gold stripes and a blue stripe at the base. Numbers are white with a gold outline. The road jersey features a red stripe outlined with gold and blue numbers, also outlined with gold. In a departure from the norm, the new Panthers uniforms will have numbers on the shoulders rather than the sleeves.

The Maple Leafs have incorporated several references to the club’s 100-year history in their new uniform. The new crest is similar to ones worn from the 1920s through the ‘60s, but with quite a bit of nuance. The leaf has 31 points, representing the opening of Maple Leaf Gardens in 1931, and there are 17 veins in the leaf, a reference to the franchise’s founding in 1917. The 13 veins at the top of the leaf represent the club’s 13 Stanley Cup championships.

The main uniform design will be familiar to Leaf fans, with the usual blue and white, now with a single stripe at the base of the sweater and two stripes on each arm.

The Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings have also added alternate uniforms to help celebrate each franchise’s 50th (golden) anniversary. The Kings jersey is gray with black highlights. The crest, letters, and numbers feature a gold outline.
